First Treatment / Setup Day

The first treatment normally takes slightly longer than the regular daily treatments. Usually 20-30 minutes are required. This is to ensure that what was planned during simulation is reproduced exactly. X-rays are taken and sometimes it is necessary for the physician to enter the room and check the set-up. If everything lines up correctly, the first treatment may be delivered.  Often only the confirmation x-rays are taken on this day and the actual treatment begins the following day.

There are usually only 2-3 time slots reserved for a "set-up" on any particular day so there is not much flexibility in the schedule. However, once this process is complete, the therapists try their best to accommodate your wishes regarding your future, daily treatment time.

Either on this day or during your first week of treatment, the radiation oncology nurse will discuss with you the self-care measures necessary for your comfort and safety during your treatment course.
